Off the Shelf: His

It recently came to my attention that Peter had never read Bonfire of the Vanities, that New York City eighties classic by Tom Wolfe.  Peter recently started a new job and is eager to be a Master of the Universe (aren’t they all…), so Bonfire is essential reading.  If you’ve never read it, you must.

The phrase “Bonfire of the Vanities” harkens back to the Renaissance when in 1497, a priest named Savonarola forced the citizens of Florence to burn works of art, books, dresses, mirrors and all other sources of vanity.  Savonarola believed vanity was a source of sin.  And so did Tom Wolfe.  Delicious, glittering, hyperbolic sin that “grabs you by your lapels and won’t let go.”

Peter is sure to get an education.  Although he’ll be wearing slightly smaller lapels.
