Breakfast of Champions

It seems that steel cut oats have made their way onto every brunch menu in New York.  If you're ordering oatmeal for brunch, I pity you.  Hollandaise is so much more appealing.  But steel cut oats are easy to tackle at home and a great, satisfying, healthy way to get started each morning.  McCann's Irish Oatmeal is the reigning classic, and the quick cook version is available at Whole Foods.

Here's the recipe on the can (doubled for 1 person, quadrupled for 2):

1 person (McCann's recommendation): Bring 3/4 c. of water to a boil; add 1/4 c. McCann's quick & easy steel cut oats.  Reduce head to low, simmer 5-7 minutes.

1 person (Annie's recommendation): Bring 1 1/2 c. of water to a boil; add 1/2 c. McCann's quick & easy steel cut oats.  Reduce head to low, simmer 5-7 minutes.

2 people (Annie's recommendation): Bring 3 c. of water to a boil; add 1 c. McCann's quick & easy steel cut oats.  Reduce head to low, simmer 5-7 minutes.

When finished, stir brown sugar to taste into pot.  Serve into bowls, top with chopped apples & sliced bananas.  Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.

Enjoy!
